Internet Training

Internet-based learning is expected to dominate the corporate training market by 2005. During the past three years, CESD has been developing internet-based courses. We have gone this route because industry wants training that. . .

  • is available when the need arises.

  • can be offered for one student as cheaply as 20 or 100.

  • has an assessment of student learning.

  • has an electronic validation of student participation (important for required training).

  • can take advantage of small blocks of time.

  • can be accessed from home.

The response that we have received from our training has been very positive. Employees feel that they learned more on line than in a regular class. Students have an opportunity to ask specific questions they may not ask in regular classes. Hourly employees feel a sense of pride from using a computer. Companies report a 35 - 75% reduction in the cost of training.

To date, we have developed the following on-line programs:

  • Health and Safety - We have the complete set of courses suggested or required by OSHA.

  • General Work Skills - We have seven courses available now and will have another eight by January. These topics address the issues that employers tell us are the most critical training needs that they have.

  • Supervisor Development - We have a specific program for supervisors that allows them to learn new skills and practice these skills over an extended time period.

  • Working Life - We have a program for first-time employees to help orient them to the needs of employers.

What makes internet-based training especially significant is its cost structure. Conventional training requires that training be done for a group at one time to be cost-effective. Internet-based training can operate on an any number/any time/any place basis. Since internet-based training can be delivered in short learning modules, students can access the material at times that are convenient. Often an entire course can be taken in time that would otherwise be dead time.
